The Post- Second World War Baby Boom
Introduction
The concept of baby boom is defined as a social phenomenon that a sharp increase of birth rate happens in a certain period or in a certain area. There are several famous baby booms in history, most of them are caused by the exciting factors, such as the end of the war, agricultural harvest or get a win in sports game. Traditional opinion indicates that baby boom connects with some good things , such as economic growth, political stability, but there is no strict logical evidence to support the idea. The most famous baby boom is the specific one happened after he second world war during the period of 1946-1964, called as the post- Second World War baby boom. In these 18 years, the annual birth rate exceeded 2% and over 78 million Americans were born.
History of Baby Boom
Take America as an example. Before the period of baby boom, annual average births in US are about 2.3 to 2.8 million. In 1946, the first year of baby boom, the number of new population was up to 3.47 million, near 1 million more than the average level. The increasing trend continued that “new births continued to grow throughout the 1940s and 1950s, leading to a peak in the late 1950s with 4.3 million births in 1957 and 1961” (Rosenberg, M., n.d.). Till 1964, the last year of baby boom, the new birth rate began to fall slowly, and it came to decrease to only 3.14 million in 1973 which was lower than any year’s births since 1945. From the above data, it can be figured out that during the period of baby boom, the maximum birth rate has increased up to nearly 2 times as the average rate before the first baby boom year. People couldn’t help thinking what is the reason to explain this phenomenon, if there would be future problems since so many births came out in so short time, and if there had been other baby boom phenomenons appeared in other countries.
Reasons of Baby Boom
One major reason of baby boom is the victory of a war. America’s baby boom just happened after the end of the Second World War. Whether the winner or the loser, people all over the world were relieved from the crucial danger of death. Especially America, the victorious nation, was more excited than other countries. “The public outburst of pent-up emotion was not confined to a number of brash exhibitionists playing to an audience of onlookers; the news was so good that it was inspired thousands of ordinary men and women” (Feeney, Paul, 2015). With the joy of coming back to home from battle, men and women had the opportunity, time and less pressure to give birth to babies.
Influences of Baby Boom
In the United States, approximately 79 million babies were born during the baby boom (Rosenberg, M., n.d.). And now, most of them are at the age of 60s. In 2014, boomers spanned the ages from 50 to 68, accounting for 24 percent of the total U.S. population and 71 percent of the population aged 50 or older (Cheryl Russell, 2015). they face a lot of problems like retirement, nursing, death which also give enormous pressure to the government.
However, when it comes to 2010s, things are not so good. One urgent problem appears: “the impending retirement of approximately 77 million U.S. Citecns” (Baton Rouge, 2015), not mentioned that there are lots of retired people. It is not easy to answer the questions that how to settle these old people, how to make their retirement life happy, how to solve their medical problem. “ You can image that if it is difficult to meet the needs of the people with 38 million people, how difficult it will be when 77 million more citicens are added to the problem” (Baton Rouge, 2015).
Other Examples of Baby Boom
Baby boom may happen in other areas with a totally different reason and make smaller influence on society. For example, in China, dragon is a very famous and favorable animal. It is a symbol of dignity and wealth. Many parents hope to have a baby in the year of the dragon. So in China or other Chinese communities, a small baby boom generally bursts out in the year of the dragon. As this kind of baby boom happens regularly- almost once in 12 years, and the new births are fewer, it would not bring to much negative effect on society.
